Westerlund 2 in Gum 29 (RCW 49) – Hubble Space Telescope Image
This Hubble Space Telescope image centres on Westerlund 2 and the surrounding nebular region known as Gum 29 and RCW 49, with WR 20a also identified within the subject. Against a deep black field, the cluster gathers in the central-right portion of the frame as a dense concentration of brilliant white stars, while orange, pink, purple and blue nebulosity spreads unevenly around it. Located approximately 20,000 light years away in the constellation Carina, the scene combines an open star cluster with a richly structured nebula.
What makes the view especially compelling is the contrast between two scales of structure: compact points of starlight and the much broader, diffuse forms surrounding them. Hubble resolves the crowded stellar grouping into many individual lights while retaining the wider setting of luminous and obscuring material. The image was released on 23 April 2015, following original observations by the Westerlund 2 science team and follow-up work by the Hubble Heritage team.
A closer look
The eye first settles on the central-right cluster, where stars of markedly different brightness appear tightly gathered. The strongest points flare crisply against the darker background; around them, smaller and fainter lights form compact groupings before thinning into the surrounding field. Glowing outlines curve around parts of the cluster, giving the nebular material an almost sculpted edge without losing its gauzy transparency.
Towards the upper left, the image becomes softer and more layered. Warm orange and pink veils mingle with cooler blue and purple regions, interrupted by delicate darker threads and scattered stars. The colours do not form simple bands: they overlap, recede and brighten irregularly, producing a complex transition from luminous cloud to open darkness.
Along the lower edge, the field grows quieter. Subtle filaments are just visible within darker material, while a subdued orange glow emerges near the lower centre as though seen through intervening shadow. Fine arcs and trails can also be traced through the mid-right region. On a large presentation, these restrained details balance the brilliance of the cluster and reveal how much of the composition lies close to the threshold of visibility.
How this image was made
The scene was observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. The original Westerlund 2 observations were obtained by a scientific team led by contributors from ESA, STScI and several European research institutions; follow-up observations were made by the Hubble Heritage team. No instrument, exposure time, filter information or colour-mapping method is specified in the supplied official metadata, so the visible palette is described here without assigning particular colours to physical materials.

Choosing the right size and finish
Fine art can feel intimate at smaller sizes and more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to judge the scale of the piece in your space.
For exact dimensions, specialist framing or a larger project, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original for colour that remains faithful to the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer antique character. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, reduced reflections and safer delivery. They arrive professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available; contact our workshop if the exact option you need is not listed.
