Veil Nebula (NGC 6960) – Hubble Space Telescope Image

This Hubble Space Telescope image traces the Veil Nebula, also identified here with NGC 6960 and the Cygnus Loop, in luminous blue, violet and red filaments against near-black space. Located approximately 2,100 light years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus, it is classified as a supernova remnant: an immense nebular structure associated with the aftermath of a stellar explosion.

The subject’s significance lies in that identity. These seemingly delicate forms belong to a remnant within the Milky Way, their extraordinary distance concealed by the image’s wealth of fine detail. Released on 24 September 2015, the Hubble view brings sharply resolved strands and diffuse regions into the same field, revealing a structure that can appear almost weightless despite the violent astronomical event from which it arose.

A closer look

The brightest movement gathers towards the upper right, where a curling blue and purple filament divides into a fine network of intertwined strands. Its edges glow against the darkness, while softer violet tones recede around it. Across the upper left, much fainter blue streaks emerge only gradually, giving this quieter part of the frame a restrained, almost translucent character.

Near the centre, warmer colour enters the composition. Red and orange structures radiate into pink and yellow transitions before dissolving into deep blue and black. A particularly dark red region near the lower centre stands apart from the cooler filaments extending around it, concentrating the eye before the scene opens again into emptier space.

The lower portion is more subdued but no less intricate. Tiny points of white light punctuate broad dark areas, while the lower right contains shadowy, interlaced threads that are easy to miss at first viewing. Along the left edge, uneven dark patches interrupt the faint luminosity; towards the lower left, a softly glowing circular area appears suspended within the surrounding black. Seen at large scale, the contrast between hair-fine light and expansive darkness becomes one of the image’s defining qualities.
