Rare Cane Single Cask Barbados 2005 Rum
Rare Cane is a newer American independent rum bottler, and this release, the second in its Single Cask Series, is a Foursquare rum from Barbados distilled in 2005 and bottled in 2021 at 16 years old. Foursquare, the Seale family distillery in St. Philip, is the most respected name in Barbadian rum, and its house style is a blend of pot still and column still distillate made from molasses, aged in Barbados's tropical heat, with no added sugar, color or flavoring. This cask was bottled unsweetened at 58.6% ABV, and because it's a single cask rather than a blend, the total outturn is small and each bottle is a one-off that will not be repeated. The one published RumX review describes a palate of coconut, vanilla and butter with a subtle finish that keeps a pleasant, distinctive sweetness, the kind of profile that long-aged Foursquare is known for once the ex-bourbon oak has had a decade and a half to work. Independent single casks of Foursquare at this age are hard to find in the United States, and at cask strength this is one to pour neat, in a small glass, with a splash of water if you want it.
