NGC 2014 and NGC 2020 – Hubble Space Telescope Image

This Hubble Space Telescope image brings together the nebulae NGC 2014 and NGC 2020 in the constellation Dorado. Across the upper centre, NGC 2014 and NGC 2020 are presented amid broad red-orange clouds, luminous wisps and a field of sharply scattered stars; below and to the left, a compact blue structure glows against near-black space. The warm, expansive cloud and the cooler circular form give the scene its remarkable visual tension.

Both subjects are classified as nebulae within the Local Universe. Released on 24 April 2020, this Hubble view is compelling not only for the contrast between its two principal forms, but for the opportunity to examine them within one richly detailed field. One appears broad and intricately folded; the other is bounded by a clearer, almost shell-like edge. Their juxtaposition makes differences in structure immediately legible, even before the finer filaments and background stars begin to emerge.

A closer look

The eye first settles on the great billowing region in the upper centre. Its brightest orange ridges curl around darker recesses, while paler strands pass through the red cloud like fine threads caught in light. Along its outer reaches, the glow becomes more diffuse, breaking into narrow tendrils and quieter veils. Tiny blue-white stars appear within and around this warmer material, their crisp points accentuating the cloud’s softer texture.

In the lower-left portion of the frame, the blue formation provides a striking counterweight. Its luminous rim forms a distinct circular outline, enclosing a brighter centre and hints of nested shells or rings. Faint filaments extend from its edge into the surrounding darkness, delicate enough to become especially apparent at large scale.

Elsewhere, the black field is far from empty. Small white points are dispersed across the image, with a denser scattering towards the upper right. Near the lower centre, barely glowing layers appear to overlap one another, creating an impression of depth between the brilliant blue structure and the broader red-orange expanse above.
