NGC 2008 – Hubble Space Telescope Image

NGC 2008 emerges from the black field as a cool-blue spiral, its curving arms gathered around a compact white core and traced with scattered knots of light. This Hubble Space Telescope image shows a spiral galaxy in the constellation Pictor, approximately 450 million light years from Earth.

The official classification places NGC 2008 among the spiral galaxies of the Local Universe. Its structure is presented with unusual clarity: a concentrated centre surrounded by arms that become progressively fainter and less orderly towards their outer limits. The image was released on 10 February 2020.

A closer look

The galaxy sits slightly away from the centre of the composition, leaving broad reaches of darkness around its luminous form. Its innermost region is almost circular and intensely bright, yet small dark flecks interrupt the glow. From this centre, pale-blue arms unfurl in uneven arcs rather than forming a perfectly balanced pattern.

On the left of the core, delicate blue strands thread through brighter material. Along the right-hand arm, the colour shifts from luminous blue-white to deeper blue before dissolving into the background. Near the lower edge of the spiral, subtle changes in brightness give the arm a mottled texture, while occasional white points flare within the cooler structure.

The surrounding blackness is not empty. Tiny points and dim, softly resolved shapes are scattered across the field, becoming especially noticeable near the upper edge and upper-left corner. At the far left, a single orange point provides a warm counterweight to the galaxy’s predominantly blue light. These restrained background details become increasingly apparent at large scale, deepening the visual separation between NGC 2008 and the field beyond it.
